Dinosaur Formulas

Cathy and dinosaurHip height = 4 times the foot length
(rough estimate)

Body length = 10 times foot length
(minimum rough estimate for biped dinosaurs)

Body length = 4 times shoulder-hip distance
(rough estimate for quadruped dinosaurs)

Human Height = 6.6 times foot length
(rough estimate)

Snout-Vent length (Shoulder-Hip distance) = distance from midpoint of front feet to midpoint of hind feet.

Speed Alexander’s Formula: (estimated)
Speed = ¼ g0.5 (stride)1.67(hip height)-1.17

[g = acceleration due to gravity: 32 ft/sec2 or 9.8 m/sec2 or 980 cm/sec2]

Speed ratio = stride length ¸ hip height
ratio < 2, walking;
2 < ratio < 2.9, trotting;
ratio > 2.9, running
