ESOL and
the Digital Camera
Digital images can be used as effective teaching tools for
English as a Second Language (ESOL/ESL) or Limited English Proficient
(LEP) students.
| Images can be used for
communication
with nonreaders. Use photo pages and posters for asking
questions, giving directions, and understanding students. |
 |
| Flash cards can be used to teach new
vocabulary.
Create cards with pictures on one side and words on the
back, for student practice. Students can make their own
flash cards to use at home. |
 |
| Picture of local or school sites and staff can help
familiarize students with their
school
and community. Students can learn the names of important
school people using photos. Teach students their schedule
of classes, bus procedures, lunchroom rules, and fire
drill instructions using a series of pictures. |
 |
| Students can take their own images of new or
unfamiliar
objects or
situations
for discussion and interpretation. Review pictures from
school activities and field trips in class discussions. |
 |
Also consider that many ESOL applications are also
useful for ESE and the general population.
